Langenstein’s Turns 90

So a lot has happened in NOLA in nearly 100 years. We've seen wars, World's Fairs, the start of one of the best music festivals in the world, and hell, we've seen our beloved Saints win a Super Bowl. One business that has stood the test of time, and remains the oldest full-service grocery store in New Orleans.

Mac is on lock

We all got an early present from the Easter Bunny this week in the form of the widely anticipated new record from Dr. John. Mac's new record titled "Locked Down" was one of the only records in April that I had circled and highlighted on my calendar. It's not just because it's new music from The Nite Tripper, but because one of my other favorite artists, Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) played an instrumental part in honing it's tone, sound, and final production.

Hattie Sparks

Nestled in the heart of the garden district off of Maple street uptown, Hattie Sparks has recently opened her eclectic emporium style boutique to some fantastic and well deserved fanfare.

I wann be like Steve McQueen – Transportation Revolution

I'll never forget the first time I saw Steve McQueen scream away on his 1962 Triumph TR6 in "The Great Escape". The low bellowing sound of the exhaust, combined with the stealth minimalist design, began my fascination with vintage motorcycles.

Amanda DeLeon

I have to admit that as of late, especially with our FU-GQ Men's feature this summer, I've been thinking about fashion more and more. I've been keeping a lookout for cool and interesting people as of late and find myself walking the streets crouching and contorting taking photos a la Bill Cunningham.

Avery Perfumery

Back in the day, scents by the name of Ralph Lauren Polo, Drakkar Noir, Aqua Di Gio, and Cool Water ruled the air. All too often, men depend on their mother/wife/girlfriend to pick our their cologne and stick with it for most of their life until someone tells them to stop wearing it.

Lakeside News – Last of the great newsstands

As we inch into the meat of the swealtering summer here in New Orleans, I've begun to think back about my summers from the past. Most of them I experienced as a young punk revolved around swimming, french quarter trips, bar-b-qued weiners, and sneaking around the pool drinking cheap Busch beer.

iHeart you GQ

For years GQ editors, writers and photographers have been drinking, eating, and grazing their way throughout Nola without any recourse, and just like a tourist. They seem to enjoy themselves just like everyone else, but continue to fais chier on us. I'm over it! Shortly after Katrina their words and photos were bit more forgiving, and they seemed to finally soak us in. But in the last few years, GQ has forgotten about our charm, wit, love and devotion to our culture, and more importantly the essence of our city.

Parks you should know

Habits are very tough to break, especially if you are a creature of them. New Orleanians as I’ve found after years of self-discovery, are the epitome of said creatures. For God’s sake, sorry Jesus, but New Orleans being a predominately catholic culture, who would know better then us.

Martin Benson

It was early and breezy Monday morning as I walked around the corner to meet up with artist Martin Benson at his uptown studio. Resting comfortably on his stoop enjoying some tea, Martin and I quickly dove right in to the importance of art in life especially in New Orleans.

Rubenstein’s Mens Shop

There will always and forever be a handful of timeless classic establishments in New Orleans.Restaurants like Galatoire's, hotels like Hotel Monteleone, and shops like Rubensteins totally solidify that notion.

Sight for sore eyes – St. Charles Vision

I can’t imagine ever being without glasses or even wearing contacts. I’ve been wearing glasses on and off since grade school and they have always been part of my identity. Just recently I was sifting through old family photos and came accross a stack of photos from high school, which was the only time in my life I didn’t wear glasses. I gazed at the glossies and said to myself under my own breath, "what a dork".

Dirty Coast’s New Outpost

I can honestly say, I'm not quite sure why it took us so long to feature Dirty Coast. The folks at the helm have been steadfast in raising our hopes and re-fueling all of us with pride in our city. It's been years in the making, and now they are movin' on up.

Webb’s Bywater Music

It had been at least 12 years since I picked up a guitar when I walked into Webb's Bywater Music a few months ago. At the time I was on sort of grail quest searching around town for the perfect axe to finally and seriously get back into playing.

The Martine Chaisson Gallery

I would like to believe that I'm a fan of art. I can be honest with you all and say that my knowledge of fine art needs a bit of touch up work since I graduated from college. The world of contemporary art has amassed a huge following, and a trend in which I want to grab a firm hold.

Re-visiting Storyville

I've lived here all my life and like many others, I was filled with so much emotion, positive and negative during that time. Folks were being interviewed all over the world explaining why we our city needed to be saved and what they loved about it. From those words of endearment, good or bad, came an epiphany. I sat down and worked out what would become the initial logo and the rest is history.

Bsi Comics

As a teenager there was not much that could tear me away from my baseball card collection. Seriously y'all, I was a dork. Each card had it's own special binder or plastic snap case to fit into, and I even went as far as writing a database to catalog each and every last one of them. At the time, I felt like a walking talking baseball card rainman. ( begin scene : obsessive compulsive disorder enters the room ).

Re:Fresh

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind for all of us in New Orleans, and I definitely drug a little ass after the Saints winning the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras to release the latest feature.

Plum, the fruit of cool

I've become so comfortable with posting each week on tuesday morning, but a little thing like The New Orleans Saints heading to the Super Bowl for the first time ever kind of pushed back this latest installment.

Fleurty Girl Shop

Nothing says I love you more than receiving a "I got Bourbon Faced on Shit Street" t-shirt for Christmas. Even the "soap on a rope" my Avon selling great grandmother used to give me beats that! I swear 1 out of 5 folks who visit our great city will leave with such a monstrosity.

Humidity Skateboards

As a young punk kid, there could not have been anything more exciting and rewarding as grinding away on a skateboard. I'll admit I busted my ass more than I was able to successfully preform a proper ollie, but there was nothing else like it.

International Vintage Guitars

I've always wondered what it would be like to be a rockstar. Not the Mark "Marky Mark" Wahlberg type, but one that truly knew how to wield an axe, guitar that is. Back in the day, when I had more hair on my head and less on my face, I convinced my dad to buy me a Fender Stratocaster-like electric guitar, black leather strap, and a Mini-Peavy amp to play like Stevie Ray.
